Entenda tempo, lugar, movimento e combinações fixas por contexto, não por tradução literal.
In, on e at também indicam lugar. A lógica muda: agora pense em espaço, superfícié é ponto de referência.
O português usa muito “em/no/na”, mas o inglês separa melhor o tipo de lugar.

in school x at school: in school pode indicar matriculado/estudando; at school destáca o local ou atividade escolar.
in the hospital x at the hospital: in pode sugerir internado; at pode indicar estar no local.
in the car x on the bus: transporte pequeno/fechado usa in; transporte grande/coletivo usa on.
in the airport x at the airport: in destáca dentro do prédio; at vê o aeroporto como ponto de referência.
